Our Song

April 19, 2012

The very lovely Liz from The Mum Blog has asked me to tell the world my ‘Our Song’ choices. I’ve been mulling over it for a while, for various reasons. It’s hard, if not impossible, to pick one song, having had two major relationships in my life. And what about the girls? We’ve had our share of Our Songs over the years. Not to mention the fact that, despite ranting on in public about all and sundry, I am actually a very private person.

But here goes.

We sing a lot in Divorce Towers. I’ve always loved singing (not sure my audiences have enjoyed it quite as much, but there we are ….) and different songs sum up different eras. The first Our Song was probably the one never off our rickety record player at uni, Ocean Rain by Echo and the Bunnymen. What’s it all about? Didn’t know then, don’t know now, but I still love it.

One song I used to always sing to the girls when they were very small and I was finding it quite hard to manage them on my own was Gershwin’s Summertime, which I used to sing as ‘Suppertime’. Suppertime was a particularly fraught part of the day, as the girls had apparently made a vow (still going to this day) never to eat the same as each other, or the same thing twice. The bit about ‘your Mama is good-looking’, was sung with especially heavy irony, as I would always look like a particularly demented zombie by that time of the evening.

TL and I have had our share of Our Songs in the years we’ve known each other, but the one that means the most is Al Green’sΒ Let’s Get Married. And we are. This summer.

oh yeah I lurve Al Green. One of my favorite songs to sing with the kids is Night Nurse by Gregory Isaacs…it has really good lyrics don’t know if you know it:
Tell her try her best just to make it quick
    Woman tend to the sick
‘Cause there must be something she can do
This heart is broken in two
Tell her it’s a case of emergency
There’s a patient by the name of Gregory
