Pilates and prejudice

September 24, 2010

I have spent the morning wrestling with a moral dilemma. Someone new has joined my pilates class. Someone *gasp*  famous. Someone, moreover, who appears in my absolute favourite TV series ever. I mean, ever. Ever. I have watched it a million times. I have forced my children to watch it. It has inspired a host of imitators, including a novel which is now probably more famous than the original book the show is based on, which in turn has led to two block busting movies. Have you guessed yet?

Should I, though, respect the privacy of my little pilates class? Should I keep the secret within its slightly crumbling walls and reveal nothing?

Well, I’m sorry but it’s just too exciting. For me. I appreciate that probably most of you will have the same reaction that my daughters did when I told them, namely, a long eye-roll followed by ‘Mummy, you’re soooooo sad.’

Anyway, it’s Susannah Harker. Who played Jane Bennett. In Pride and Prejudice! With Colin Firth!!! Yes, the one where he dives into the pool and comes out with his shirt all wet.

Just as well it’s not Colin himself who’s joined the class. I simply don’t think my heart could take it. As it is, with the lovely Susannah wafting around (she doesn’t look a day older, by the way, she’s beautiful) I feel I ought to be wearing a crinoline as I do my cat stretch and assume the box position.

Here, for all of you who love P and P too, is a little snippet of the glory that is the BBC version – the one true version for we afficionados. Oh, and the novel based on the series? Yep, Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Happy sigh. How lovely. Cilla would have been good too…

Cilla WOULD have been good. So would Lionel Blair or any of your other suggestions ….I haven’t laughed so much in ages xx

So when is she inviting Colin along? C’mon, we might as well get to the real reason to all of this, eh?
    ;o)

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 24, 2010 at 7:37 am

You’re right, I’m hoping he’ll come to our Christmas party! Imagine the scene, a bunch of mummies stretching, then Colin strides in wearing his shiny leather boots and wet shirt ……oooh!

  • Chic Mama September 24, 2010 at 8:33 am

I am terrible and never recognise famous people so would have been completely oblivious! 😉

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:11 am

Ah, you’re a lot more disciplined than me. Needless to say my Swan Dive has taken a turn for the worse since our new student started ….

  • Addy September 24, 2010 at 10:32 am

You lucky girl. Get to know her well and she might introduce you to Mr Darcy. You could throw a party and invite her and a “friend” along. Don’t forget to invite your blogging friends too. Fair’s fair.

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:12 am

Ooooooh, that’s such an exiting thought, Addy! The idea of Mr Darcy at my Christmas party! I’d probably burn the whole house down in excitement, instead of just burn the mulled wine like I did last year. And don’t worry, you’re definitely coming! Only thing is I’ll be too shy to ask her ….rats!

  • Emma September 24, 2010 at 10:53 am

How very exciting! Colin Firth would be more exciting but I’m not sure I could handle doing Pilates next to him!!! Enjoy your new friend 😉

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:13 am

I really couldn’t handle even standing next to Colin Firth, let alone doing my lateral thoracic breathing or whatever it is. I’d definitely pass out 😉

  • spudballoo September 24, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Ooooh yes that is v exciting. But how do you do pilates with her in the room, don’t you want to keep pointing and staring?! x

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:14 am

I do want to keep pointing and staring but I’m trying to be very grown up ….admittedly I did choose a mat nearby last time, very sad!

  • Potty Mummy September 24, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Oh DD, that was just lovely. Thanks for that clip – now I know what I need to order online from Amazon to collect the next time I’m back in the UK and which will keep me warm on the winter evenings here… x

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:16 am

Oh you MUST get P&P for Christmas, it is just the best. Mind you, there are absolutely loads of clips on YouTube which I trawled through when finding that little compilation … I must admit I dwelled on the wet shirt episode a bit ….naughty 😉

  • Footballers Knees September 25, 2010 at 5:59 am

DD, am so jealous, P&P is also my favourite, I have watched the last 3 episodes time and time again – when Colin starts to thaw and offers his lake to the uncle to use for fishing – that’s when the build up starts. Please ask Susannah if she’s still in touch with him! Go on, when will you ever have this opportunity to be in the second link of six degrees of separation!
PS Have just re-read this comment and realise how sad I sound, but all self respect goes out of the window when it comes to Mr Darcy.

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:25 am

I know, I really should ask her! Trouble is that she is very ladylike and Jane Bennett-y – I can’t imagine just breezing up to her. She has her own built-in crinoline. And I’m just way too chicken as well. I will try and build up to it though because all self respect SO does go out of the window when it comes to Mr D. One of my favourite scenes btw is when she’s playing the piano and he’s just looking at her with such love and longing. I’m really surprised the piano doesn’t just self-combust.

  • exmoorjane September 25, 2010 at 11:25 am

I’m SO with cosmicgirlie. She’s very lovely but not reason enough to get me to do the sodding plank (I HATE the plank). However, might consider it if Mr Firth were there, planking too.

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:26 am

Mmmmm, Mr Firth, planking ….that’s quite a thought …..Actually we don’t do the plank but I’m sure he’d look lovely doing the downward dog xx

  • Metropolitan Mum September 25, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I Love P&P, but Bridget Jones? Really? I could never have guessed.

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:27 am

That’s why Brigit’s great love is called Mark Darcy! And he’s played by Colin Firth, who was Mr Darcy ….oh yes, it’s all there – even Hugh Grant being the naughty Mr Wickham …

  • Carrie September 27, 2010 at 1:10 am

Hi – so nice to meet you on Friday – I hope you enjoyed yourself. I can’t wait for the next mum blogger meet up – everyone is so much fun.

btw, I am impressed that you go to a pilates class at all, let alone with clebs! Do you find it really helps? I’ve done some yoga, but not for years. Found it very relaxing.

My ironing tape and then DVD when they were invented! In the days when I did ironing before it had to be on someone’s body 5 minutes ago I used to watch this because I knew it off by heart and if I got to a fiddly bit I didn’t have to look up. I never took to the movie the same way – probably because of the absence of Mr Firth I’d say.

    • Dulwich Divorcee September 27, 2010 at 3:28 am

You mean the Kiera Knightley movie? I absolutely agree, she’s a beautiful girl but she really doesn’t cut it as Elizabeth. And as for her Mr Darcy, no. I mean, just no.

  • Lynda September 27, 2010 at 6:39 am

I always look at Kiera Knightly and get fixated by her cheekbones. I keep wondering how hungry you have to be, and for how long, for them to look like that. Then I start feeling sorry for her as food is one of life’s pleasures and she looks like it’s one pleasure she has never had. Matthew Macfadyen is rather lovely but lets face it – he’s no Colin Firth.
